Special Programs → High School Programs → Local School Signature Programs
In addition to offering a comprehensive high school program, a number of high schools have created signature programs that integrate a specific focus or distinguishing theme with the skills, concepts, and instructional strategies of some portion of a school’s curriculum. The theme or focus becomes the vehicle for teaching the traditional high school curriculum in a fresh, interesting, and challenging way. In some cases, the school may adopt a school- wide signature focus. Some schools have also created themed academies to engage students through a small learning community approach.

Winston Churchill High SchoolThe Academy at Winston Churchill High SchoolThe two Signature Programs in the Academy have students follow a comprehensive curriculum over four years with a focus in their area of interest. The students make connections with the future and are prepared for lifelong learning. They participate in enrichment activities, develop portfolios as well as attend master classes. Each Program requires students to enroll in a set number of courses in their focus area in addition to meeting the MCPS graduation requirements. In addition to their coursework, students complete a project where they explore a career and the pathway to that career. In their project reflections, they indicate the activity was invaluable in shaping their understanding of the process of preparing for college and a career. Additionally, students are expected to listen to professionals share their job experiences and their individual journey in the career pathway. The Signature Programs within Churchill’s Academy are:
