Media Center

    The library media center hours are between 9:00 AM and 3:45 PM. Students are permitted to check out books for 10 minutes before school begins on most days of the week.

    • 3rd graders may check out two items at a time.
    • 4th and 5th graders may check out three items at a time.

    All materials are due two weeks from the date they are checked out. Books may be renewed several times.  Students may check out additional books if needed to complete class projects. Students may not check out if they have any overdue items.

    Volunteers are always welcome!  Please contact media staff to volunteer.

    Vision & Mission

    The Chevy Chase Library Media Program is an important part of our students’ education. It provides the  students and staff members with access to literature, information, technology and instructional resources. Working in collaboration with teachers and other staff members, the library media staff promotes reading and teaches students to develop the skills necessary to inquire, think critically and gain knowledge.

    One of the goals of our Library Media Program is to ensure that students and staff become effective users of ideas, technology and information. We cultivate a love of learning, researching, creativity and reading. We are always looking for new books, computer programs, videos, and books that are diverse to enhance our collection.

    Instruction

    Students visit the media center every week for literature appreciation and information literacy lessons, literature appreciation, and makerspace activities. The library media specialist also collaborates with staff to develop and implement lessons integrating information literacy skills into instruction through Inquiry Projects. 

    Programs

    Black Eyed Susan Illustrations, Royalty-Free Vector Graphics ...

    		 Each year students can participate in selecting the Black-Eyed Susan Award winners. Each year a new set of nominees is selected by school librarians from around the state. Students in Grade 3 listen, read  and respond to Picture Book nominees during their library and classroom instruction. Students in grades 4 & 5 may choose to read 3 of the 10 nominees in the Graphic Novel and the Chapter Book categories. Voting takes place in April and the winner is announced in early May.

    		Students in grades 3,4, and 5 can also participate in the recess makerspace clubs. The clubs meet once a week at the students recess/lunch time.  The students have an opportunity to create several STEAM projects throughout the year. 

    Royalty-Free Bookshelf Clipart Stock Images, Photos & Vectors ...

    		 Students can sign up to become Student Library Assistants. These students come to work in the library several times each month to help us keep the space neat, clean and organized. Students are responsible for a section of the library, and also help with daily tasks such as shelving, sharpening pencils and running errands. They provide a wonderful service and are recognized at the end of the school year.

    		Thirty-six 5th graders who are a part of CCNN Morning News Show, prepare and present our Morning Announcements each day rotating in 3 teams.  They are dedicated to writing, producing, and airing the news live on a daily basis. From our TV studio, they operate the control room and rotate their shifts to keep us up to date on what’s happening at CCES and all around.

    I grew up in the DMV area and got my Bachelor’s Degree in business from the College of William & Mary. After a few years working as a software consultant, I pursued my real passion to become a teacher and got my Master’s from the University of Maryland. Since then I have taught 5th grade in MCPS for the last 7 years. I love learning so much that I went back to school and got a second Master’s in Library Media Science. This will be my first year as a Media Specialist. Outside of teaching I enjoy reading, traveling the world, baking, and all things nerdy (ask me about Comic Con)! I’m beyond excited to be joining the CCES family.

    Hi! I truly love working in the Media Center at CCES. I received my undergraduate degree from West Virginia University and my Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Trinity College. When I am not at school you can find me running, walking, reading or taking care of my growing family.
