Student Service Learning (SSL)

Verification forms are available in the main office and on the MCPS website. Please visit the MCPS website for FAQ, forms and other information.

Hours that are earned from the pre-approved list require an activity verification formIf the activity you wish to perform service for is not on this list, then you need to fill out a Service Learning Request Form (560-50) prior to performing the activity. Failure to do so may prevent you from being credited for service performed.


Systemwide SSL Timelines:

  • Service completed during the summer — DEADLINE: Last Friday in September.
  • Service completed during 1st semester — DEADLINE: First Friday in January.
  • Service completed during 2nd semester — DEADLINE: First Friday in June.

SSL Opportunities

New opportunity to earn SSL hours.

The Harwood House Thrift Shop in Damascus is looking for students with good computer skills and a desire to help others less fortunate than themselves. Your skills are needed to help list donated items on eBay or Craig’s List. Skills involve cleaning and inspecting items, taking photos, listing items online and responding to questions from prospective buyers. The Harwood House is open Tuesdays from 8:30 – 2:00 and Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11:00 to 3:00. If interested, please contact Ms. Elizabeth Bradley at (240)988-1064. Sports Plus

Sports Plus is an organization that offers year-round, uniquely structured, co-ed sports and social programs for verbal children able to follow multi-step directions between the ages of 5 and 14 with mild to moderate autistic spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. Both indoor and outdoor programs are offered. Volunteers assist coaches with activities, help with set-up and clean-up, and most of all, provide encouragement to the athletes. Expertise in a particular sport is NOT required, but enthusiasm is. More details can be found at www.playsportsplus.org. If interested in any of the following activities, please contact Diane Golden at golden4@comcast.net, and let her know how often you would like to volunteer. And if you want to volunteer with a friend, let her know so you can be scheduled together. Please only sign up for days you know you can commit to.


Current volunteer opportunities:

  • American Legion Post 171 in Damascus – Looking for a few students willing to help out with Kitchen Duties on a regular basis (not just a one-time thing) on the first and/or third Thursday of each month during the school year. There are two shifts available: 4:00pm-7:00pm and 7:00pm-9:00pm. You can work one or both Thursdays, and you can work one or both shift times.   • Montgomery Parks – hundreds of Student Service Learning approved volunteer opportunities – many dates and locations – Special Events, Cleanups, Outdoor Activities – If interested, go to www.MontgomeryParks.org/SSL to look for opportunities.   • Montgomery Parks – Natural surface trail work project – To see scheduled dates and locations and to sign up, visit www.ParksVolunteers.org and click on “Search & Apply”, then “Trails”, then “Trail Workdays.
  • Circle of Hope Therapeutic Riding – Ongoing dates/times - When you volunteer you are able to work with horses, receive free training, make a difference in someone’s life, plan events and fundraisers.   • Montgomery County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Service – This organization offers opportunities for training as Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians. Candidates would join a local volunteer fire & rescue department, all training and uniforms are free. These positions offer training in responsibility, discipline and are a springboard to a career in the Fire & Rescue Service, as well as offering great experiences for students considering careers in medicine, nursing, or health related fields. Jr. Members (16-18 years old) have an amazing opportunity to develop leadership skills and make a REAL difference in their community. Jr. Members work side-by-side regular members on emergency calls and provide rescue and fire suppression services. Some participating stations are Damascus, Laytonsville, Germantown, Hyattstown, as well as many others. Damascus Community Recreation Center (DCRC) SSL Opportunities

Damascus Rec Center has several SSL opportunities coming up:

  • Club Adventure After School Program – 3:00pm to 6:00pm (12:00pm to 6:00pm on half days). Volunteers will assist with teaching sports, games, arts, crafts, and assisting the current staff in mentoring children 5 to 12 years old.   • Adopt the children’s garden at the Damascus Community Recreation Center. You can also help with the water schedule and crop rotations. DCRC is looking for volunteers to start in September to work with Club REC from 3:00-6:00 Monday through Friday.

  • VisArts in Rockville has various opportunities for students to earn Student Service Learning hours. They are a non-profit arts organization based in Rockville dedicated to engaging the community in the arts and they are always looking for volunteers.
