Quarter 1 Curriculum 2.0
WEEK 3-4:
During weeks 3 and 4 students will continue to examine the characteristics of adventure stories. They will compare two or more settings, events, and characters in an adventure story. Students will analyze how a multi-media representation would contribute to the meaning of an adventure story. Students will focus on responding to specific questions in collaborative discussions, accurately quote text when drawing inferences, and use details from the text in determining the theme of a story. Characteristics of an adventure story: |

* A special type of fiction in literature containing stories presenting a series of exciting events in which the main character is a hero or heroine (protagonist) who is setting out on a journey to face a challenge
* There is a physical action and the characters are often placed in extreme situations and are forced to take risks in order to complete their journey.
* There is often a villain (antagonist) who uses their skills to stop the protagonist.
* The setting changes, moving from place to place as we follow the protagonist through his or her journey. It underlines the sense of danger and obstacles to be overcome.
* The plot is fast paced with action and excitement throughout the story
* The themes reflect realistic human experiences, messages about people
* Narrative structure and elements are organized in a time ordered sequence
* The author may use 1st person or 3rd person to tell the story
* the story can be realistic or fantasy
Fifth graders will continue to use the novel Fearless to determine the parts of a story. They will be identifying the various parts of a story by using the plot diagram below:
