How to Deal With Tragedy and Violence

"Just as despair can come to one only from other human beings, hope, too, can be given to one only by other human beings." ~Elie Weisel

At this time of sorrow I am thinking of all of our students, parents, and teachers. I am confident that we will continue to work together in order to keep our students be safe and feel comfortable in school. We will continue nurturing kindness, caring, and hope. We will continue talking about our feelings and remind ourselves that “all feelings are OK,” and that “it is OK to cry when we feel sad.” We will continue to smile at each other and remind each other that “Peace begins with a smile*.” Many parents have probably spent more time with their children and have hugged their children more often this weekend. Many parents may have worried and have wondered “what should I tell my child about this horrific shooting?” Since many children may have questions about the shooting incident at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., I have compiled some links for parents, guardians, caregivers, and teachers on addressing questions from their children and resources for more advice on talking about school shootings.

Next week I will be available to meet with groups of students and/or with individual students if needed. I will have hard copies of these materials for all staff members on Monday morning. Please let me know if you would like me to meet with your child.
