This last year at Garrett Park is a stepping-stone to the next challenge – Middle School. Our goal is to prepare the students academically, emotionally, and socially with a focus on organization and Thinking and Academic Skills. Each year, the fifth grade students enjoy collaborative and individual inquiry-based projects, such as an original rollercoaster design, a Wax Museum, and an individual science expo project and display.
In science, students will explore the topics of physics and motion, electricity and magnetism, astronomy and space science, and cells and heredity. Within the school year, the science curriculum will include field trips and experiential learning opportunities such as the Explore It All’s Robotics field trip and Planetarium exploration.
Throughout the year in social studies, the students learn about Colonial America's struggle to become independent, the Revolutionary War, the principles on which our government is based, and the initial growth of the new country. Our goal is to develop active citizens that participate in the democratic process.
In reading, students read a variety of texts including adventure stories, mysteries, biographies, poetry, informational texts, technical texts, and graphic novels. Vocabulary development, spelling, oral and written communication, and grammar also receive significant emphasis in 5th grade. Students will actively participate in literature discussion groups to hone their comprehension and discussion skills.
Fifth grade math focuses on developing a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through exploration, hands-on activities, and collaboration. Students work to explain not only how to solve a problem, but why the problem works and the mathematical thinking behind the solution. Fifth graders will engage in extensive studies of fractions, decimals, multiplication, division, and number sense.
