Chorus

The Glen Haven Chorus is open to all 4th and 5th grade students interested in a high level of singing performance. Although there is no audition required to join chorus, students must demonstrate excellent behavior and a commitment to rehearsal standards. The chorus meets weekly during the school day.

Instrumental Music

Instrumental Music is offered to all 4th and 5th grade students. Students may choose to play flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone saxophone, violin or cello.

In the first year of instruction, students learn to produce sound and read notes and rhythm in musical notation. In the second year of instruction, students gain more technical mastery of their instrument. Second year students play in larger ensembles and develop the more complex skill of group playing. All students perform in the winter and spring concerts.

Recycling / SERT Team

Students learn about why we recycle, what can be recycled, and how material is recycled and made into other objects.  Students communicate this information to other students and to the Glen Haven staff.  These students are responsible for collecting used paper and plastic bottles from each classroom and office on a weekly basis.  SERT (School Eco-Response Team) encourages efficient and responsible energy use by Montgomery County Public Schools. Students work with staff to implement energy savings strategies throughout the school to earn grants.

Safety Patrols

The Glen Haven Safety Patrols consist of 5th grade students who have been nominated in February of their 4th grade year by teachers, staff, self or parents and/or guardians. They begin training in March and take over the outgoing 5th grade patrols in April.

Patrols are selected on the basis of the following characteristics:

  • Self-motivation
  • Exhibits responsibility
  • Ability to work cooperatively with peers and adult staff
  • Leadership qualities

Our patrols are supported by the school-based safety patrol sponsor and a Montgomery County Police Officer assigned to Glen Haven through the police safety unit support our patrols. Meetings are held twice a month. Training continues as an ongoing process as the patrols sharpen their safety skills (through videos, lecture and active training). Gold badges are awarded on a monthly basis for outstanding service.

Safety patrols are assigned to inside hallways to assist students in moving through the school (before and after school), bus stops, street crossings, and parent drop-off posts.  Patrols are responsible for ensuring a safe transit to and from school.

Being a patrol is an important responsibility that must be taken seriously. Many of our students and families count on our patrols to make their walk to and from school each day a safe one.
