Greenwood History
In 1970, Greenwood Elementary School opened its doors to the children of Brookeville and Olney. The location of Greenwood Elementary School in Brookeville, Maryland is a historic location. During the War of 1812, President James Madison sought refuge in Brookeville when the British were burning Washington. This made Brookeville the capital of the United States for one day.
Brookeville celebrated its Bicentennial on September 10, 1994. Former Greenwood school counselor, Mr. Lewis, led the safety patrols in the towns Bicentennial parade. Several Greenwood students at that time were also involved in the reenactment of President Madison’s famous visit.
The year, 2020, marked the fiftieth anniversary of Greenwood Elementary School. While the school has been upgraded over the years with the addition of a gym, additional classrooms, and updated playground equipment, what has remained timeless is the Greenwood community atmosphere of warmth, caring and respect.
