Math 5
Students will add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals using their understanding of place value. Students will also use the standard algorithm to multiply multi-digit and decimal numbers.
Compacted Math 5/6
Students will multiply and divide fractions and decimals. Students will also classify 2-D figures and use different strategies to solve for Volume and Area when there are fractional side lengths.
Reading 5
In Unit 1, students will explore the essential question, “Why do laws continue to evolve?” through various articles and texts. In Unit 2, students will explore the essential question, “Why do we value certain qualities in people?” through excerpts of the novel As Brave As You by Jason Reynolds.
Enriched Literacy Curriculum
Students will explore the themes of “fitting in,” “honesty”, and “self-respect” through a variety of short stories and novels. Students will also participate in many narrative writing workshops focusing on the craft of narrative writing.
Social Studies
Unit: Development of New America (1787-1800)
Unit Question: How did the creation and transformation of governing documents affect the new nation and people living there?
Unit Overview: Students will explain the purpose of the Constitution and how it established a more effective centralized government. They will also identify the three branches of government and their scopes of power and explain the federal, state and local levels of government.
Science
Unit: Our Neighborhood, Our Watershed
Unit Questions: How do Earth’s major systems (atmosphere, rivers/oceans, solid Earth, and living things) interact? How do the properties and movements of water shape Earth’s surface and affect its systems? How do humans change the planet? How do particles combine to form the variety of matter one observes? What underlying forces explain the variety of interactions observed? What is the process for developing potential design solutions?
