General Information

Homecoming DanceAs part of Montgomery County Public Schools' Downcounty Consortium, Northwood High School is a four-year comprehensive high school that boasts a diverse population of over 1700 students. The community collaborates with Montgomery College to provide students with opportunities to pursue higher education and personal growth.

Northwood originally opened in 1956, but the school was closed in 1985. The expanding student population in the Silver Spring area prompted the re-opening of Northwood in 2004.

The new Northwood began with only its freshman class (Class of 2008) and the school gradually grew each year before becoming a four-year high school during the 2007-2008 school year. The Class of 2008 graduated on June 2, 2008 at DAR Constitution Hall.

Northwood hosts several smaller learning programs, known as academies. These include:

  • Montgomery College Middle College
  • Academy of Music, Theatre and Dance
  • Academy of Politics, Advocacy and Law
  • Academy of Technological and Environmental Systems Science
  • Humanities, Art and Media Academy
  • Academy of Finance, Accounting, Marketing and Education

Students participate in a hybrid 7-period block schedule.

Northwood's dedication to academic excellence is also demonstrated through the school's involvement with many programs, including Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success (ACES).

The Northwood school colors are red and black. The school mascot is the Gladiator.
