TPMS Magnet Program

Februray 5 2023 Update

Hello Magnet Families!  Sorry we missed last week's update.  It is a busy time here in the magnet office as new families were invited to join the program next year.  The whole school has been an exciting place.  We had our winter concert (see highlights above), the 7th grade went to Medieval Times where Ms. Wells was named Queen, and we are kicking off Black History Month with a school-wide competetion highlighting the achievements of Black and African American people throughout history despite having to resist historic and ongoing oppression.  Check the table below to learn about a cool summer camp and all the exciting upcoming events!

Special Request:

Magnet families, this is the time of year when students in 8th grade find out which high schools and programs they did, and did not, get accepted into.  For some, it is a thrilling time, for other, it is heartbreaking.  Students are curious about others and/or want to show off their accomplishments, but they aren't always aware of how that feels to, and how that harms, other students.

When teachers hear these conversations in their classes, they are quick to shut them down, but we are asking all our magnet families to please TALK to your kids, and remind them that high school selection is PERSONAL and sometimes painful, and they should refrain from discussing it with other students at school.

GEMS Camp

June 12th to August 17th 2023

Application due Feb 14th

The Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) offers middle and high school students an exciting platform to engage in hands-on STEM activities that are designed to stimulate inquiry-based thinking, scientific skills, and interest in STEM careers. Rising 7th – 12th graders will have the opportunity to explore STEM in a sophisticated laboratory setting and learn about STEM careers under the guidance of college-level mentors called Near-Peer Mentors (NPMs).
