2023 Summer information
What you need to know and do before school starts in the Fall:

- Backpack
- Binder (Many students prefer the zip up binders)
- Folders (8-1 for each class)
- Pencils (Lots of them!)
- Earbuds
Recommended:
- Highlighters
- Pens
- Ruler
Students need access to a computer at home to do assginments:

Summer Forms to complete:
- Load Money into your student's School Bucks account so they can purchase lunches at school!
- Your household may qualify for FARMS benefits, including free lunches! Apply HERE.
- Are you seeing your student's grades and schedules? Make sure that you are signed up on Parent VUE.
When: Thursday, August 17th 9:00am and 1:00pm
Who: 6th graders NEW to MCPS
What: Students new to the county in 6th grade are invited to come to TPMS to get to know our school! There will be a concurrent parent meeting as well. If you haven't signed up, please email Mr. Roy Lynn and Ms. Laurie Steinberg to provide your child's preferred session.
6th Grade and New 7th/8th Grade Mock Day
When: Thursday, August 24th from 8:15am to 12:00pm
Who: All TPMS 6th grade students and new to MCPS 7th and 8th grade students
What: 6th grade and "new to MCPS" 7th and 8th grade students are invited to participate in a "mock day" to acquaint them with the TPMS school community before the official first day of school on Monday, August 28th. On Thursday, August 24th, your students may ride their bus from their scheduled bus stops to Takoma Park for an all school orientation day. School will dismiss at 11:30 a.m. and students may ride home on their regular buses.
Students in our special education discrete programs are strongly encouraged to attend, but their bus transportation may not be available, so parents are encouraged to drive their students to school to meet their teachers.
6th Grade Family Picnic
When: Thursday, August 24th from 5:00 to 7:00pm
Who: All TPMS 6th grade families
What: The PTSA will be sponsoring a family picnic for 6th grade families and staff to get to know each other. Families can sign up to bring a dish to share with our community.
FIRST Day of School
When: Monday, August 28th
Who: All TPMS
What: Staff will assist students in locating their classrooms. All students will receive their schedules on the first day of school. Grade level counselors will be available to answer student scheduling questions.

1st PTSA Meeting
When: Tuesday, September 12th from 7:30-8:30pm
Who: All TPMS
What: Please join us in the cafeteria at 7:30 PM for the first PTSA meeting of the school year.
Back to School Night
When: Thursday, September 14th from 6:00-8:30pm
Who: All TPMS
What: Please join us at 6:00 PM for the following Back to School Night Activities:

6:00 PM - PTSA meet & greet and Resource Fair in the cafeteria

6:00 PM - Special Education Meeting in the media center

6:30 PM - Caregivers move to their child's 1st period class for Ms. Martin's Welcome and then caregivers will visit their child’s classes, following their child’s schedule.
Summer Assignments for Math and Reading:
READING--FOR all incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders
- Students will have the opportunity to select a book from a list connected to important social issues. Students will earn 8 SSL hours for reading the book and creating a project to advocate for a specific social issue in the community. See the assignment for directions and more information. Some titles can be borrowed from TPMS over the summer and will be available to pick up outside the main office starting June 20th. If you want to get a copy before then, please see Ms. Todhunter in room 108.
- Students are encouraged to read two texts and create a choice reflection to turn in at the beginning of the school year. See the assignment for more information and directions. This assignment is not eligible for SSL hours.

Here is our best thinking on resources for your school for the summer of 2023. Each link provides access to a PDF copy of the packet. Middle School resources are for those that are entering a given grade or course.
You can find the answer keys for each guide also on the document below. The reason to include the answer keys is to allow students to check their own work, to provide students with some level of feedback.
