Welcome to the Science Department at Wheaton High School. We take pride in offering an inquiry-based program aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Scientific inquiry refers to the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on the evidence derived from their work. Inquiry also refers to the activities of students in which they develop knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas. Each class offered in this department has a hands-on inquiry-based laboratory component.
The science curriculum at Wheaton High School offers a broad range of experiences in all areas of science including AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, and AP Physics C. We also offer AP Chemistry, AP Biology, and AP Environmental Science. Additional science electives, including horticulture, environmental science (non-AP), and a semester organic chemistry course can be taken. Through the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program, students can enroll in a Biomedical course sequence that features Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions, and Biological Innovations. Students in the Bioscience Academy begin this sequence of courses in 9th grade. We are the only high school that offers this opportunity in Montgomery County.
The one required science course is NGSS Biology, which is a life science credit. Students taking NGSS Biology are required to pass the Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA) at the end of the course. All students must complete at least 3 years of NGSS science to meet the graduation requirement, but students are encouraged to consider scheduling science during all four years. In addition to NGSS Biology, we offer NGSS Chemistry, NGSS Physics, and NGSS Astronomy with Physics. Colleges recommend a minimum of 4 years for students in science-related majors. We also offer a wealth of science-related clubs and activities, including Green Team, Chem Club, Science Bowl, and Science Olympiad.
