Unit 1 is typically a seven-week unit taught in September and October.
Students begin the year with tasks that establish routines used during the year to promote an active and cooperative learning environment. Students' work with numbers includes place value, number representation, expanded notation, data analysis, and patterns. By the end of Grade 2 students are expected to demonstrate mastery of the addition and subtraction basic facts. Place value, number representation, and expanded notation are concepts that support mastery of basic facts.
In Grade 1, students interpreted graphed data in terms of least and most. In Grade 2, students continue collecting data from surveys and investigations and display the same data set in multiple ways. Data interpretation includes comparing quantities using more, fewer, and equal. Students organize and order their data to communicate answers to questions.
Mathematics is the study of patterns and relationships. In Grade 1, instruction focused on repeating patterns. Students explored repeating patterns in their world through concrete experiences. In Grade 2 students extend their understanding of patterns to include increasing patterns using models and numbers. Students sort, classify, predict, and identify missing elements in patterns. They distinguish between growing and repeating patterns. Patterns help students recognize order in their world.
