Unit 4 is typically a five-week unit taught from February to March.
Mathematics is the study of patterns and relationships. In this unit, students analyze and apply statistical patterns and relationships. The study of data provides the opportunity to make connections to other mathematics topics and to other curriculum areas. It also provides the opportunity to practice computation in a contextual setting as students consider the statistical ideas they encounter every day.
In Grade 4, students graphed data collected over time to answer questions. They displayed numerical as well as categorical data using a variety of displays. Students used concrete objects to determine the mean, median, mode, and range of data sets and compared data sets to answer questions. In Grade 5, students use bar graphs, circle graphs, line graphs, line plots, and stem and leaf plots to display data. They collect and organize data with an appropriate display and defend the display they have selected. Students compute and compare range, mean, median, and mode in order to describe a set of data. These experiences prepare students for Math A where they will consider how to analyze and use data effectively.
