The elementary school art curriculum is based on themes that show students the relevance of art in their own lives and the lives of people across time and place. These themes cross the boundaries of traditional disciplines and make connections between the student, art, and real-life issues; and they provide focus for exploration, expression, communication, and the creation of art.

  • Environment: The environment affects the way people think, feel, behave, and live.
  • Communication: People communicate thoughts, feelings, and ideas using words, symbols, signs, and behaviors.
  • Communities: People live in communities that are identified by common personal, social, and organizational beliefs, values, or traditions
  • Human Issues: People use knowledge, skills, and creativity to fulfill needs and desires.
