MCPS Apprenticeship Information:
For rising Grade 11 and 12 students, MCPS offers the Apprenticeship Maryland Program that allows students to complete a paid Work Based Learning experience with an employer during the school day and earn high school credit that counts toward graduation. Details can be found on this MCPS page.
For seniors getting ready to graduate, MCPS is building the post-secondary apprenticeship page on the MCPS website for students getting ready to graduate, as well as alumni. The apprenticeship opportunities and organizations on this page are for students getting ready to graduate or have already earned their high school diploma.
The MD Department of Labor has a Apprenticeship Locator site where post-secondary apprenticeship opportunities are available for students to review and complete application.
Additional Apprenticeship Opportunities:
Opportunities are posted on this page as they become available.
NEW: The Science & Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP). SEAP places high school students in Department of Navy (DoN) laboratories where they take part in real Naval research for eight weeks during the summer. The application cycle for summer of 2024 is open until November 1, 2023. Click HERE to download the SEAP Information Flyer.
The internship has a duration of eight weeks (with the possibility of extending up to two additional weeks). Stipend levels will be determined by the student's years of participation in SEAP and will be paid bi-weekly via direct deposit.
Stipends are as follows:
New participant: $4,000 | Returning participant: $4,500
SEAP gives academically talented sophomores, juniors, and seniors interested in STEM the opportunity to learn about Naval research and technology while receiving first-class mentoring by top scientists and engineers. SEAP is a competitive program with around 300 placements in more than 30 laboratories around the country in which many participants go on to careers within the DoN. Interns are selected based upon academic achievement, personal statements, recommendations, and career and research interests.

THE ASVAB & Career Exploration: Armed Services Aptitude Battery:
The ASVAB is administered FREE to interested tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students and is an excellent career exploration tool. It can help identify the student's interests and aptitude in the following areas: verbal, math, science and technical skills. When a student's score is interpreted, the student will learn how their interests and skills relate to the demands of more than 400 occupations, helping students to identify suitable career options. ASVAB results are released only to the student and not to the armed services. Students who wish to use their test results as part of an enlistment post-secondary plan will need to have a conversation with military recruiters. The student can provide their scores to the recruiter. Taking the ASVAB at MCPS high schools in no way involves a commitment to the military..
February 15 was the Northwest High School ASVAB test date for the 2023-2024 school year. Parental consent is required for a student to test at Northwest High School. Parental consent is granted by submission of this Google Form. The test will be offered once each school year. Testing and score interpretations will be during the school day. ASVAB Scores will be interpreted approximately three weeks after testing. Date and time TBD. Students who tested can pick up scores in Room 126 prior to or on the day of the interpretations. Visit the NEW Official ASVAB Career Exploration Program web site and enter as an applicant for more information on testing and resources. | update 21 August 2023 |
